IACN Staff Diary This diary is used by the IACN staff to log their thoughts and experiences. Friday 2 July 2004 It is becoming more and more obvious that the 'stop and search' is being used to harass Muslims. The government must take prompt action to prevent alienating the Muslim community. Monday 21 June 2004 Tony Blair is under immense pressure over the EU constitution primarily because of the negative media coverage of this affair. Perhaps the Prime Minister is now in a slightly better position to understand and empathise with the Muslims suffering as a result of the unfair media coverage. Friday 11 June 2004 Elections are over at last. The Labour party has had a good beating in the local elections. Lets see what happens on Sunday. Sunday 30 May 2004 The local and European elections are less than two weeks away. Muslims who form the largest minority block vote must vote smartly. Sunday 23rd May 2004 So, the 'coalition' forces in Iraq want immunity? I wonder if they plan to engage in more acts of rape, torture, murder and so forth. Thursday 20 May 2004 Have been busy revising, well sort of......
well actually not really but will get to it soon as I have the first exam
next week Tuesday Friday 14 May 2004 It appears that Piers Morgan has been forced to leave the Daily Mirror and has not resigned by choice. Piers should consider writing a book on media bureaucracy and dirty politics. In my opinion, Piers has been the best Editor the Daily Mirror has had for quite some time. Decline and fall of the Daily Mirror? Thursday 13 May 2004 The former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey said in a speech "I remain unapologetic about appealing to Muslim leaders to condemn outright such actions (as suicide bombing) and to go on condemning." I think its about time Lord Carey is questioned as to how much he has condemned, if ever, the massacre of civilians in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, etc through carpet bombs, depleted uranium and F-16s? Tuesday 11 May 2004 Last night as I watched Richard and Judy, I became really annoyed by their questions about the torture and abuse of Iraqi's by British and American soldiers. They started to discuss how in the 'context of war' such things can happen, when soldiers see their friends being blown up, the so called 'red mist' can come down and under the pressure the soldiers can snap, they almost tried to excuse the soldiers actions. Why is it that this understanding of despair and desolation are not understood when you are a Palestinian watching your people under brutal occupation or an Iraqi in a state of deep anguish because your lands and your people have been invaded by foreign armies. Humanity needs to look beyond its own race, colour and creed, all peoples despair and anguish needs to be understood if we are to have global peace and harmony!!! Thursday 6 May 2004 Gwyenth Paltrow and her remarks about mothers
putting careers before family life and children has thrown up an interesting
debate. I have to admit a situation where parents are spending more time
with their children rather than careers has to be good for our children and
our families. Tuesday 4 May 2004 I've had a boring and tough weekend, lots of studying writing essays and presentations-----not enough fun or relax time! In the eyes of those who supported the war
these pictures of torture are a big blow to the integrity of the British and
Americans fighting in Iraq, to those of us who opposed the war this is just
one more issue that illustrates the double standards of the US and British,
they claim to be upholders of human rights and freedoms yet they are no
better then war criminals! Saturday 1 May 2004 Students around the country including the IACN staff are getting their heads down as the exams are less than two weeks away. Good luck people. Friday 30 April 2004 Some horrific pictures showing Iraqis being tortured are emerging. Its absolutely disgusting so see the policemen of the world who like 'promoting' democracy engage in such acts. But hey, its not the first time. Thursday 29 April 2004 Just comeback form four hr back to back
History lectures mmmh exciting!!! Had a really interesting discussion on
Western modernity and Islam, is modernity just to do with Westernisation? I
obviously spoke up and said that I rejected the idea that 'Modernity' is
just to do with the West/Secularism, there can be an alternative modernity
which includes Islamic principles and modern technology and science! Tuesday 27 April 2004 Hijabi Sisters on the front page of 2 national newspapers today. I fear that attacks against Sisters may now go up. Monday 26 April 2004 The Daily Mail attacked Muddassar Arani today. Why? Oh because she is representing Abu Hamza. I wonder how Daily Mail choose who to attack? Sunday 25 April 2004 Some of our journalists are behaving like Nazis and they seem to have taken it upon themselves to demonise and dehumanise Muslims. Friday 23 April 2004 Easter break is finally over. Let the game begin. Wednesday 7 April 2004 I just fail to understand when a Nazi says "go back to your country". Huh? I AM in my country. Tuesday 6 April 2004 Chelsea beat Arsenal today and Monaco beat Real Madrid. What's the world coming up to? Talk about the world going crazy... Monday 5 April 2004 In the wake of the current threat we face in Britain at the moment, we have written to journalists around the country today on how they could help decrease this risk. We have had a very positive response from many journalists so far. Let's hope others also follow the lead. Saturday 3 April 2004 The media is not helping with the fight against terrorism by marginalising the Muslim community. Muslims are being separated from the rest of the community and this will not help in the short and long run. Friday 2 April 2004 Last night I dropped my mother off at the airport as she was going away to Pakistan; as soon as she had gone through to the departure gate I began my journey back to Nottingham. 10 minutes later I received a phone call to tell me that mum was being questioned by police on the basis that ‘she has just returned form Pakistan a month ago and has also visited Saudi Arabia’ Now I know extra vigilance is necessary in the light of terror attacks but this behaviour is ridiculous and what a basis for questioning. Luckily she made her flight in time. Tomorrow is the sisters conference organised by FOSIS, Insh’Allah lets hope for a good turn out by the sisters. Thursday 1 April 2004 Terrorism is a threat all of us face. Terrorists do not differentiate between Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, etc and hence all of us should stand against it. Having said that, it would be highly naive to ignore the motives of terrorists and simply be reactive. Friday 26 March 2004 A UN resolution condemning the assassination of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin has been vetoed by the US. No surprise there really since the US has an impressive history of such actions. Is this licence to kill? Thursday 25 March 2004 Ah, Blair on his 'historic' visit to Libya. Looks like where there is oil, there is Blair. Shell has already signed an agreement to re-enter Libya's oil and gas industry. Wednesday 24 March 2004 India beat Pakistan to win a thrilling one-day series. Let's hope that the tests are just as good. Monday 22 March 2004 Rehana Akbar from the Social & Women's Affairs Team (SWAT) went on a local radio station today to discuss issues such as forced marriages, honour killings, caste system. It was pleasing to see that this very serious issue was highlighted so openly. Sharon "the man of peace" as uncle Bush puts it has further stained his already blood-soaked hands through the assassination of Shaykh Ahmed Yasin, a disabled old man. Congratulations to Sharon for this peace incentive. Saturday 20 March 2004 I attended an NUS delegates meeting at the University of Nottingham today. It was good to see a large number of Muslim delegates and the number had more than tripled within a year - all praise to Allah. Friday 19 March 2004 Terrorism is disease all of us could do without. However it is shocking to hear some prominent MPs suggest that terrorists do it because they "hate Western values". Either these MPs are really stupid and incompetent or they are lying. Either way, they shouldn't be in the Parliament. Thursday 18 March 2004 We have been informed that a lady working for a recruitment agency in Paris was told by her boss not to recruit Arabs at all. The boss did not realise that she was a Muslim. Wednesday 17 March 2004 Islamophobia is a cancer rampant in our society. Muslims everyday continue to experience discrimination in all walks of life. It is a shame that instead of bridge-building, most of our media is guilty of spreading hatred and dividing communities.
