Media must not aid terrorism 05 April 2004 While Britain remains on high alert and at risk of a terrorist attack, the Nottingham-based Islamic Affairs Central Network (IACN) is urging the media to not support terrorism through irresponsible journalism.
IACN has today E-mailed journalists around the country advising them to avoid criminalising the whole Muslim community. Copies of the open letter are also being sent to over 300 MPs.
"Terrorist attacks on Britain are now imminent and it’s time that the Media spotlight actually fell on itself. In today’s image driven world the media can either help to prevent terrorism or help provoke it. Unfortunately, in the battle to get higher ratings and increased sales they have forgotten their responsibilities. Our letter is an attempt to highlight where the media have gone wrong and how they can help boost Muslim participation in the fight against terrorism," said Farooq Sheikh, General Secretary of IACN.
