Kilroy-Silk's resignation welcomed

16 January 2004

IACN welcomes Kilroy-Silk’s decision to step down as the BBC daytime chat show host.  In view of his anti-Arab remarks, this was the only sensible decision left to take.  It is regrettable though that he has continued to stand by his sweeping condemnation of the Arab people, under the guise of criticising Arab ‘states’ and in the name of ‘Freedom of speech’.

Freedom of speech is one of the most fundamental elements of a free society but at the same time we would like to remind him that the laws of this country dictate that freedom of speech brings along certain responsibilities which he has clearly disregarded.

“Throughout this campaign we received support nationally and internationally but it was at the local level where activism was most heartening.  We had the participation of various shops, community centres and students from both universities.  The local community also sent us messages of support and donations to help us in our efforts.  We wish to sincerely thank the people of Nottingham for their assistance.  We would also like to express our gratitude to the Commission for Racial Equality and the numerous outspoken MPs who stood up against racism,” said Farooq Sheikh, General Secretary of IACN.
