President & CEO
ASDA/Wal-Mart UK
Dear Mr DeNunzio,
It has been brought to our attention that ASDA supports Operation Christmas
Child, a project run by the Samaritan's Purse.
The Samaritan's Purse is an evangelical organisation run by Franklin Graham,
the hatemonger whose remarks such as describing Islam as "a very evil and
wicked religion," have in the past served only to anger the Muslim
community.
This project exploits the human suffering around the world to promote the
extremist evangelical teachings by offering food in one hand and bible in
the other.
Recently we have witnessed the 10 Downing Street, Co-Op, B & Q and South
Wales fire service retract their support for this project, as they have
realised the toxic agenda behind this operation.
Many ASDA customers profess the Muslim faith and it is crucial that you
immediately suspend any cooperation with the Samaritan’s Purse and prove
that you indeed care for your customers.
We look forward to a response from you.
Kind regards,
Hasan Abdullah
Director of Public Relations
Islamic Affairs Central Network (IACN)
Response from ASDA
Dear Hasan
Thank you for your email about Operation Christmas Child.
Asda is not offering corporate support to this organisation - nor would we,
since we have a clear policy of not supporting overtly religious or
political organisations of any kind. In response to your letter we will
remind all our stores and depots of the need to adhere to this policy.
What may have happened that, in all innocence, one of our stores may have
supported the organisation at a local level. But I can confirm that our
charity, the Asda Foundation, has received no requests from any of our
stores or depots for funding for Operation Christmas Child or Samaritan's
Purse.
Please accept my apologies for any offence we may unintentionally have
caused.
Yours sincerely
Tony DeNunzio
